Afghan woman, baking bread (naan), in a ground tandoor (tanoor). Every family (if can afford it) have maximum 2 tandoors in their house. One inside the house in a separate room known as ” woorjai” or a fireplace, and one out side the house in an outdoor kitchen. That is because in summer they bake bread outside the house and in winters inside.
Tandoor have other purposes as well, the reason bread is baked inside the house in winters, because when they light fire in a tandoor a system is made under the house, such that the heat from the fire is distributed to the nearby rooms keeping them warm in winter. After the baking is over the hot tandoor is used to keep water pots in to boil for later use, which is then used for many purposes making tea, or hot water for shower etc.
